How did the crash happen?
Before the crash, a Kansas City police officer pulled over a blue Kia Soul for a traffic violation, police said. As the officer exited his patrol vehicle, the Kia sped off. The officer did not drive after the Kia but learned the car was stolen after running its plates, according to the department.

The Kia hit a large utility pole and flipped onto its roof. The eight occupants in the Kia included the 16-year-old driver, the 37-year-old male front passenger who also died at the scene, the female passenger who died, a 20-year-old man, a 4-year-old, a 6-year-old, a 12-year-old and a 13-year-old, police said.
